Allergies
An allergy is a reaction of your immune system to a foreign object that it should not normally react to. There are many different allergies that affect humans. Here is a summary of the different types of allergies you may encounter:
Allergies to animals
Animal dander1 i.e. the combination of skin, hair and saliva are tiny particles which can stagnate in the air for hours.
You may have itchy or irritated eyes or even sneeze.
These scales can accumulate on mattresses, fabrics, sofas, clothes or furniture for example.
Being allergic to animals can cause asthma or rhinitis. The most common symptoms are :
- Sneezing
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Wheezing
- Red eyes
- Skin rash
- Itching
Who is affected by allergies?
Dust mite allergies
Dust mites are tiny arachnids (spider family) that are invisible to the naked eye and thrive in our spaces between 20 and 25°C. Dust mites can be found on fabrics, pillows, mattresses, linen, carpets or furniture2.
Because of their tiny size, dust mites can easily get into your nose, eyes, and even your lungs. The symptoms that dust mites cause are the same as pollen allergies:
- Sneezing
- Runny nose
- Weeping eyes
- Itchy nose and throat
- Cough
- Breathlessness
Insect allergies
Insects (such as cockroaches) are the world's largest and most numerous family of animals. They thrive mainly in warm places and in densely populated cities. Insects also thrive in damp places such as kitchens, bathrooms and garages.3.
Insect-related symptoms are similar to allergies and asthma:
- Sneezing
- Cough
- Nasal congestion
- Skin rash
- Wheezing
